Power Up Your Prints: Reinforced Filaments Unleashed

When it comes to 3D printing, the possibilities are endless. With various types and grades of filaments available on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for your project. In this article, we'll explore the differences between glass fiber, aramid fiber, carbon fiber, glass spheres, and ceramic spheres filaments, and how they can enhance your 3D printing projects.

Glass Fiber Filament

Glass fiber filament is made of tiny glass fibers infused with a thermoplastic polymer. The addition of glass fibers to the thermoplastic material enhances its strength, rigidity, and impact resistance. This filament is a great choice for industries that require high strength and stiffness, such as automotive, aerospace, and robotics. It's also a popular choice for producing mechanical parts, tools, and fixtures.

Aramid Fiber Filament

Aramid fiber filament, also known as Kevlar filament, is a high-performance filament with exceptional resistance to impact, abrasion, and fatigue. The filament is lightweight and extremely strong, making it ideal for applications requiring great strength, toughness, and durability. Aramid fiber filament is often used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense, and is also used in producing body armor, ropes, and other industrial applications.

Carbon Fiber Filament

Carbon fiber filament is a popular choice for producing high-performance parts that require high strength and rigidity. The addition of carbon fibers to the thermoplastic polymer filament enhances its tensile strength, modulus, and stiffness, while also providing good dimensional stability and resistance to temperature and chemical exposure. Carbon fiber filament is also known for its excellent heat resistance and electrical conductivity. This filament is often used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and medical.

Glass Spheres

Glass spheres are tiny, hollow spheres made of glass. They are often added to filaments to improve the overall strength and stiffness of the part. Glass spheres are lightweight and do not affect the color of the filament, making them an ideal choice for applications such as automotive parts, consumer products, and aerospace components.

Ceramic Spheres

Ceramic spheres are tiny, hollow spheres made of ceramic material. They are often added to filaments to improve the overall strength, stiffness, and heat resistance of the part. Additionally, ceramic spheres have much lower density than glass ones and provide excellent electrical isolation, making them ideal for use in high-temperature applications such as engine components, aerospace parts, and industrial machinery.

Different Fiber Grades Explained

In the world of 3D printing, not all fiber reinforcements are created equal. The grade of the fiber plays a pivotal role in determining the mechanical properties and suitability of a filament for different applications. At Ares Industries, we integrate Industrial and Aerospace Grade fibers into our filaments achieving maximum performance.

Ground Fiber

This is the cheapest option, typically made from recycled or low-quality fibers that are ground down into irregular sized often damaged short fibers still offers some mechanical properties over non-reinforced filaments. It's good for hobbyists or for prototyping where strength is not required but dimensional stability and matt fiber surface finish is wished for. We do not offer this though as its against our believe in quality. Instead we have for example COP ToughM which is equally form stable and offers a matt finish while still being usefull for functional parts.

Industrial Grade Fiber

As the middle ground, Industrial Grade fibers are of higher quality than Ground Grade. Shorter but thicker fibers offering consistent performance for professional applications. These fibers are often tailored for industrial applications where parts need to be strong, durable, and able to withstand rigorous use. Our Aramid ASA and ABS for example is using this resulting in their incredible abrasion resistance thanks to the thick fibers sticking out.

Aerospace Grade Fiber

Representing the pinnacle of fiber quality, Aerospace Grade fibers are the finest available. Thin and long with a high stiffness. These premium fibers grant the highest strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue resistance, and stability under extreme conditions. As the name suggests, this fiber grade is engineered for the aerospace industry, where only the best materials can be used. This for example allows out HTPA CF15 to reach its unbelievable stiffness of 15000MPa.
